The customer gets a letter that doesn't sound like it was written by a robot in 1998.
Same shape applies in many domains. Fraud detection uses traditional AI to flag suspicious transactions and generative AI to write the customer-facing explanation. The single most common mistake I see is companies pouring generative AI budgets into problems that don't need generation. Lead scoring on top of a generative model. Inventory forecasting through an LLM prompt. Customer churn prediction wrapped in a chat interface. Each of those problems has a perfectly good traditional AI solution that's faster, cheaper, more accurate, and easier to audit. The team built the generative version because generative was on the budget line. The result is a worse system at higher cost.
The opposite mistake is also common: teams running content generation through clunky template systems and rule engines because that's how it was done 10 years ago. A 2014-style customer-letter generator with 400 templates is worse and more expensive to maintain than a single generative AI prompt with examples. Modernize that part of the stack.
The honest framing for any AI investment in 2026: split the workflow into decisions and content. Point traditional AI at the decisions. Point generative AI at the content. Let each one do what it's actually good at. Both technologies stick around. Both have their place. The companies that figure out the split early end up with cheaper, more reliable systems.
