The product's core value is AI-generated. A coding assistant, a customer service AI, a document analysis platform. The AI isn't a feature; it's the product. AI-native architecture handles this; AI-enabled wrappers struggle.
Quality matters in production. When the AI's output is consumer-facing or revenue-affecting, eval discipline matters. AI-native products have it; AI-enabled products usually don't.
Iteration cadence is high. When the AI behavior needs to evolve based on usage data, AI-native products have the data infrastructure to support it. AI-enabled products require rebuilding the data layer.
The use case is novel. New AI use cases benefit from AI-native architecture because the patterns aren't established. AI-enabled wrappers force the use case into the existing product shape, which often doesn't fit.
When AI-enabled is fine

To tell the difference during evaluation:
Question 1: When was the AI capability first shipped? AI-native vendors will describe AI capability as foundational, present from early versions. AI-enabled vendors will name a quarter when they "added AI features." If the answer is "we added AI in Q3 last year," it's AI-enabled.
Question 2: Show me your eval set. AI-native vendors have eval sets they update regularly and run against every change. AI-enabled vendors usually have "we test with internal users" or generic accuracy metrics. The eval set is the most reliable single indicator.

Recent rebrand around AI. A product that used to be marketed as "intelligent automation" or "machine learning platform" suddenly becomes "AI-native" without product changes.
AI features as a separate menu item or tab. AI features in their own UI section are usually bolted on. AI-native products integrate AI throughout the experience.
Demo polish vs production reality. The demo flows show AI working perfectly on prepared inputs. Production usage on your data is significantly worse. AI-enabled wrappers often demo well because the demo controls the inputs.
